Pale Yellow Named the Color of 2014

If you are looking to change the color of your home next year and can’t quite decide what color to use, you can’t go wrong with the 2014 color of the year. For 2014, PPG Pittsburg Paints has named pale yellow the color to beat all colors for the year.

Why pale yellow, technically called “Turning Oakleaf” by the paint company? Per their press release here is what they had to say:

“Homeowners have moved away from the muted hues influenced by economic factors in recent years. Turning Oakleaf, which is soft enough to be a neutral but bright enough to generate a sunshine-like energy, represents a trend toward warmth in harmonious living, deep appreciation for the surrounding natural elements and a thorough understanding of enlightened philosophies,” said Dee Schlotter, brand manager, The Voice of Color program. “We are experiencing the popularity of the soft yellow shade across all markets, such as home decor, automotive and electronics, making it a clear Color of the Year selection.”

Why Yellow is a Good Color to Use Anyway

Yellow has been a popular color to use on the outside of a home well before Turning Oakleaf was named a color of the year, and with good reason. It is a color that makes us feel more cheerful and happy just from looking at it. It is also a color that helps us think more creatively and be more curious about our surroundings.

The upbeat in mood that is caused by this color is one of the biggest reasons that it is such a good color to use on your windows and doors. Not only will you feel more cheerful when you get to your home, but your guests will also.

Don’t Like Pale Yellow, Not a Problem

If you like the color yellow, but just aren’t a big fan of the pale version of it there are many other shades of yellow to choose from. You can go with plain yellow, light yellow, dark yellow, yellow-green, etc.

With the technology available today when it comes to making paint colors, you can have any shade of yellow you want.

Tips on Using Yellow

Yellow is one of those colors that look really good in small doses, but if overdone can make a person feel ill rather than happy. So the biggest piece of advice that we can offer for yellow is to match it with a neutral color to balance it out.

Instead of doing your entire exterior in the same color yellow, try using it on just your windows or doors and then using a different color for the siding. For a shade like pale yellow though, using it on your siding and then choosing a more neutral color for your windows and doors could be a good balance because pale yellow is a more muted shade.
