Should I Replace my Patio Door or my Windows, First?

The question of whether you should replace your windows or patio door first is not one that is easily answered.  There are at least 4 factors that can attribute to the decision of which one to choose.

Factor One: Change the Broken Windows or Patio Doors First

The one that is in the worse shape is the one you need to replace first.  This could be a window that is beyond the simple repairs and maintenance that you have been doing to it over the years.  Or it could be the patio door that no longer latches when it’s closed and has become a strength training workout just to slide it at this point.

Factor Two: Replace the Patio Door if the Style is Bothering You

If how your patio door look bothers you more than how your windows look, then change the patio door first.  And the same goes if the windows bother you more than the patio door, change the windows first.

Also keep in mind that changing the style of your patio door is only going to change the look for your patio or deck, and whatever room the patio door leads out of.  Changing the style of the windows in your home will spread out the change across the whole house.

Factor Three: The Energy-Efficient Upgrade

If you don’t have energy-efficient windows or an energy-efficient patio door, you need to change the windows first.  An energy-efficient patio door is only going to do you good in one room, whereas energy-efficient windows will help the whole house.

Factor Four: Which Project Fits Your Budget Better: Patio Doors or Windows?

And finally, it all comes down to how much you have to spend, or how much you are willing to spend.  To make a good decision, select the style and type of patio door you want, as well as the types of replacement windows you want, first.

Once you have what you want picked out, you will be able to get the prices for each separate project to be able to compare which one is best for your budget.
